The Chronicle of Higher Education has come up with a great alternative to the federal government’s College Scorecard–the College Reality Check. This tool makes it easy for high school students and parents to find and choose the right college based on a school’s size, academic quality, location, and price, as well as your family’s income.

Using College Reality Check, you can find and select colleges and compare their prices, graduation rates, average average debt of graduates, loan default rates, and graduate earnings at the nearly 3,600 colleges currently in the database.

Here’s an example of a search for a college in California from a student whose family makes between $75,000 and $100,000:

Unlike College Scorecard, College Reality Check also lets you compare statistics of different schools simultaneously and filter your results by state, family income level, and the categories above. You can compare up to five colleges at once.

Choosing to attend college is an important investment in your future, and given its high cost, it’s not a decision you should take lightly. Tools like College Reality Check can help you sort through the maze of colleges, but it’s certainly not the only resource you should utilize when finding and selecting a college, comparing costs, and determining your best return on investment.
