How to reduce hidden college costs

Posted on March 15th, 2016

We all know college is expensive, but there are also many hidden costs that can drive up the price even more.

In a video for MONEY, Lynnette Khalfani-Cox of The Money Coach explains the hidden costs of college–and what you can do to reduce them.

Hidden college costs can add up

Khalfani-Cox notes that hidden costs can include fees for parking (which average students $635 per year), surcharges for certain majors, activity fees, and fraternity or sorority costs, which can be $1,000 or more for students who participate.

Luckily, while some fees may be required, others can be reduced or eliminated, she says.

Being diligent when you check your college bill is important. You may be able to eliminate some charges, such as a college health insurance cost, if you already have health insurance.

How to lower textbook costs

Textbooks are another area to consider when reducing your college costs, Khalfani-Cox says.

She suggests lowering textbook costs by using e-books or open source books if possible, renting textbooks, or even taking them out from the library (or photocopying sections you need to read).

For students who prefer to buy textbooks, she recommends getting the international version of the textbook, which can save you 70-80% on the cost.
