New scholarship available for science and engineering students

Engineering and science majors have the opportunity to gain up to $2,500 in financial aid for college by applying for the The Dan Coiro Scholarship. Sponsored by CengageBrain, an online hotspot for textbooks and electronic literature, the scholarship targets students who would have trouble financing an education otherwise.

Dan Coiro, the scholarship's namesake, won a similar prize himself back in May of this year when his students entered him into a competition to name the country's best teacher's assistant. One of the prizes the Rutgers grad received after winning America's Top TA was the honor of having his name attached to a grant that helps students in his chosen field afford an education.

Coiro received the title after his student, Chelsea Viscosi, submitted a statement to CengageBrain commending her TA for his commitment to his job while juggling his own heavy course load as a current student.

"After I read what the students wrote on the comments for this competition, I learned a lot about myself and it has helped me to know that I was meant to teach. I feel great to know that I made a difference in students' lives in a positive way," Coiro stated in a press release for CengageBrain.

Along with having his name attached to the scholarship, Coiro himself received funding that will help him pay for college.

CengageBrain asks students pursuing a degree in the fields of science or engineering to submit an application before January 31 to secure a chance at winning a scholarship. The contest is open to high school juniors and seniors and three total scholarships will be awarded to successful applicants.
